After topping off the oil, wait for 5 minutes for it to drain into the crankshaft. Remove the dipstick again and re-check it to be sure the level is between the upper and lower lines. As you check the oil level, it’s also important to note the quality of the engine oil. Clean oil has a clear color and flows easily. If your oil is viscous and dark black in color, it’s time to get an oil change.
